Lu's residesnce is in fact a residential complex which was first founded over a thousand years ago. The structures that remain are renowned for the distinctive wooden carvings which adorn the facades of almost all the buildings and have resulted in an area several blocks wide, all of which can legitimately be called a work of art.
The intricate carvings have been dated to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and their level of preservation is very good. The artisans believed in using excellent quality wood and allowing its natural grain and color to guide the work, so most of the carvings remain unpainted. The type of carving most prevalent is known as white-wood carving due to the pale colours of the favored materials: basswood, white peach wood and gingko wood."
